"The isles of Greece! The isles of Greece!
Where burning Sappho loved and sung,
Where grew the arts of war and peace,
Where Delos rose, and Phoebus sprung!"
– George Gordon Byron, The Isles of Greece.

Tsantilis Art Gallery is delighted to present Isles of Light and Memory, a solo exhibition by Stella Sevastopoulos, where the poetic essence of the Greek seascape unfolds across the canvas. Inspired by the verses of Lord Byron, Constantine P. Cavafy, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Sevastopoulos transforms the Aegean into a timeless landscape of adventure, memory, and myth.
For centuries, the Greek sea has inspired poets, painters, and travelers alike. Byron, captivated by Greece’s spirit, immortalized its seascapes in his poetry, linking them to the country’s rich heritage and struggle for freedom. Cavafy on the other hand spoke through symbols in his poem “Ithaca”, which reminds us that the journey is more important than the destination:
"And if you find her poor, Ithaca has not deceived you.
Wise as you have become, with so much experience,
you must already have understood what Ithacas mean."
Coleridge’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” explores the sea’s mystical, sometimes menacing power, which can be both dangerous and as tranquil as a painting:
“Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.”
Through sweeping blues, golden light, and fluid brushstrokes, Sevastopoulos pays homage to these literary legacies, capturing the sea not just as a subject, but as a living force.
